MOND predictions of “halo” phenomenology in disc galaxies

چکیده

We examine two corollaries of MOND pertaining to properties of the equivalent darkmatter halo. MOND predicts for pure exponential discs a tight relation involving the halo and disc scale lengths and the mean acceleration in the disc, which we find to test favorably against the Verheijen sample of Ursa Major galaxies. A correlation between halo and disc length scales is also apparent when the “maximum disc” contribution is assumed, but we demonstrate that this follows from the more general MOND prediction. The second MOND prediction involves the existence of a maximum halo acceleration, which also tests favorably against the Ursa Major sample for different assumptions on the disc contribution.

The shape of “ dark matter ” halos in disc galaxies according to the modified dynamics

Analyses of halo shapes for disc galaxies are said to give incongruous results. I point out that the modified dynamics (MOND) predicts for disc galaxies a distribution of fictitious dark matter that comprises two components: a pure disc and a rounder halo. The former dominates the true disc in regions of small accelerations, where it controls the z-dynamics in the disc (disc flaring etc.); it h...

Evaluation of New MOND Interpolating Function with Rotation Curves of Galaxies

The rotation curves of a sample of 46 low- and high-surface brightness galaxies are considered in the context of Milgrom's modi_ed dynamics (MOND) to test a new interpolating function proposed by Zhao et al. (2010) [1] and compare with the results of simple interpolating function. The predicted rotation curves are calculated from the total baryonic matter based on the B-band surface photometry,...

The Dwarf Galaxy Ddo 47 as a Dark Matter Laboratory: Testing Cusps Hiding in Triaxial Halos and the Mond Paradigm

We present an analysis of high resolution HI data of the dwarf galaxy DDO 47, aimed at testing the hypothesis that dark halo triaxiality might induce non-circular motions resulting in rotation curves best fitted by cored halos, even if the dark matter halo is intrinsically cuspy. This hypothesis has been invoked in order to reconcile the predictions of the ΛCDM theory with the rotation curves o...

Velocity dispersions of dwarf spheroidal galaxies: dark matter versus MOND

We present predictions for the line-of-sight velocity dispersion profiles of dwarf spheroidal galaxies and compare them to observations in the case of the Fornax dwarf. The predictions are made in the framework of standard dynamical theory of spherical systems with different velocity distributions. The stars are assumed to be distributed according to Sérsic laws with parameters fitted to observ...

Tidal streams in a MOND potential: constraints from Sagittarius

We compare orbits in a thin axisymmetric disc potential in MOND to those in a thin disc plus near-spherical dark matter halo predicted by a ΛCDM cosmology. Remarkably, the amount of orbital precession in MOND is nearly identical to that which occurs in a mildly oblate CDM Galactic halo (potential flattening q=0.9), consistent with recent constraints from the Sagittarius stream. Since very flatt...
